![]() ![]() If you have a few bucks to spend, here are some other MusicBrainz-friendly tools that we tested and liked. Picard was our favourite MusicBrainz client, but it’s not the only one. I did that a few times though and wasn’t disappointed. You could just highlight everything and save the corresponding tags, but you’re putting a lot of faith in MusicBrainz if you do that. It does the majority of the legwork for you - you can drag in heaps of music, tell it to search, and then go through and apply the tags as you see fit. It takes a more active, involved approach to organising your library though. Picard is probably the most versatile tagging app we’ve tried. Best of all, Picard can update your filenames in addition to updating its tags, which makes organising your actual music files and folders easy too. You can then choose to save the tags or make changes. Picard takes an album-centric approach to tagging your music, so you can drag in a track, and the app will show you the album it’s from, not just the appropriate tags. There’s another one that downloads cover art. There are plugins to use Last.fm tags as your genres, moods and so on, so you can always find a song in the style you want. With the right plugins, you won’t just search MusicBrainz, but also Amazon, Google, SoundtrackCollector, eBay, Game Music Revolution and lots of other sources. It can do acoustic fingerprint searches, entire CD searches, and has a lot of plugins to extend its features. Open source and free (and named after my favourite Starfleet Captain), MusicBrainz Picard (Windows/OS X/Linux) is the official MusicBrainz tagging tool, and it offers a simple interface that hides a lot of power. This is how “Track05.mp3” turns into “The Beatles – Here Comes the Sun.mp3.” If they can’t, or if there isn’t enough data to search, then they check the song against AcoustID, a database of audio fingerprints in order to figure out what the song really is. Those apps do two things: First, they check your song against the database to see if they can find a match. Then, there are apps that use this database to identify and tag your music. A lot of people know “MusicBrainz”, but they don’t know that MusicBrainz is just a massive database of music. It’s a treasure trove of songs and their associated information, and there are almost a dozen apps that interface with it in order to organise and tag your music. It features information on close to a million artists, over a million releases and over 13 million individual recordings. ![]() MusicBrainz is a free, open, music encyclopedia. They will clean up your library so that when you do upload them iTunes Match and Google Music will find high-quality replacements to store in the cloud for you, and you’ll never have trouble finding what you want to hear when you choose to listen offline. That’s where the tools we’re about to mention come in. When I start a station based on a mislabelled song, the following tracks are appropriate and in-theme, but I still have to update the song myself. While I’ve found that iTunes Match and Google Music often do a great job of figuring out mislabelled tracks, it doesn’t update its metadata in my music library. ![]() Sadly, if you like any older, obscure or remixed tracks, especially if you’re into electronica or independent music, you’re going to run into trouble finding what you want. I’ve had varying levels of success with each approach. You could also just sync your library with iTunes and let iTunes Match sort it out, or with Google Play Music and let Google figure out what “Track01.mp3” really is. It may be easier to just give up on your music library entirely and switch to a service like Spotify, which lets you hear whatever you want whenever you want it. ![]() ![]() In fact, there are thousands of movies and TV episodes to choose from, as well as sports, news, kids’ TV and music channels.Īll of that content is spread across both free and paid channels, allowing you to subscribe to individual services or cut the cord completely. Parmy Olson and others have criticized media coverage that presents the group as well-organized or homogeneous Olson writes, "There was no single leader pulling the levers, but a few organizational minds that sometimes pooled together to start planning a stunt." Some members protest using legal means, while others employ illegal measures such as DDoS attacks and hacking. īecause Anonymous has no leadership, no action can be attributed to the membership as a whole. Since 2008, a frequent subject of disagreement within Anonymous is whether members should focus on pranking and entertainment or more serious (and, in some cases, political) activism. A website associated with the group describes it as "an Internet gathering" with "a very loose and decentralized command structure that operates on ideas rather than directives". Internal dissent is also a regular feature of the group. The philosophy of Anonymous offers insight into a long-standing political question that has gone unanswered with often tragic consequences for social movements: what does a new form of collective politics look like that wishes to go beyond the identity of the individual subject in late capitalism? Anonymous' media profile diminished by 2018, but the group re-emerged in 2020 to support the George Floyd protests and other causes. In 2012, Time called Anonymous one of the " 100 most influential people" in the world. The operating activities section of the statement of cash flows begins with net income. Finally, financing activities are those used to provide funds to run the business (loans, interest).Īs mentioned, operating activities are those that are used or generated by the day-to-day operations of the firm. Investing activities include investments in other firms as well as investments in the firm itself (items like machinery, land, or other fixed assets). The operating section reflects cash flows generated by and used by the day-to-day operations of the business. To provide clear information about what areas of the business generated and used cash, the statement of cash flows is broken down into three key categories: operating, financing, and investing. It essentially reconciles accrual basis accounting to cash basis, or cash flow. The indirect method begins with net income and reconciles each account in order to arrive at net cash flow. The direct method lists cash flows directly from revenues and expenses, whereas the indirect method reconciles income to cash flows. Despite that, the most common method used by far in general practice is the indirect method. FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) favors the direct method. There are two key methods of preparing the statement: direct and indirect. They can see if cash is generated primarily by daily operations or if cash is being generated or consumed by events outside the firm’s normal course of business. The statement of cash flows also helps external users determine the driving forces behind the firm’s cash flows. For example, a firm reporting a strong profit but very little cash flow might raise some questions as to what was recorded to drive profits that isn’t also driving cash flows. Users compare earnings to cash flow to assess the validity of the earnings data. Cash flow is also a crucial metric for determining the value of a company.Įxternal financial statement users also rely on the statement of cash flows to help them evaluate the quality of the firm’s earnings. To support cash planning and to provide external financial statement users such as lenders and investors information about the firm’s cash flow, the statement of cash flows is prepared. It must also have adequate cash flow to support daily operations. Earning a profit is wonderful, but it is not the only goal an organization has. The opposite is also true: it can experience a net loss and still have cash on hand. A firm can be profitable and still not have an adequate flow of cash. This can create timing differences between profits and cash flows. Revenues and expenses are recorded when they occur, not necessarily when cash moves. Remember, most firms use accrual accounting. Importance of the Statement of Cash Flows To fully understand the firm’s flow of cash, the statement of cash flows is needed. Thus, the income statement does not provide all the insights necessary to understand a firm’s cash flows. Remember, under accrual accounting, transactions are recorded when they occur, not necessarily when cash moves. It is a crucial statement, as it shows the sources of and uses of cash for the firm during the accounting period. The final financial statement is the statement of cash flows. When the prepaid expense balance increases, that means the company has a cash outflow for expenses that have not yet been recognized in the income statement. ![]() ![]() But studies in labs around the world have since linked low levels of BPA to reproductive, cognitive and developmental health effects. BPA was approved in the 1960s for food contact use. But that scrutiny has seldom focused on PFOA and related chemicals in food, even as the Biden administration says it is mounting a “whole of government” effort to limit exposure to those substances across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study estimated that almost every American had it in their blood.įor the past 20 years, activists, lawyers, regulators and Hollywood stars have trained a spotlight on polluted aquifers around company towns like Parkersburg, W.Va., where DuPont released the chemical into the Ohio River. A study of blood samples from 1999 to 2012 found the human-made compound can remain in people’s bodies for years. Scientists have linked PFOA to kidney and testicular cancers, liver problems, thyroid issues, low birth weight, and the suppression of children’s immune systems. ![]() Critics of FDA describe an agency that sets a high bar for alerting the public of food chemical safety issues, even when PFOA and similar compounds are detected in food at relatively high levels.įDA rarely checks back in with chemical makers about what is already in the food supply - even as science exposes more about health effects. In a six-month investigation, E&E News reviewed decades of FDA, corporate and court documents to form a clearer picture of the federal response to the chemicals’ presence in food. While much of the public focus so far has been on drinking water, the dangers of PFOA and similar compounds in food packaging have largely been overlooked, especially by regulators. The nation’s food safety watchdog agreed, effectively waiving the longer-term health study.įor the next half-century, PFOA would find its way into the American diet through everything from buttery popcorn to burgers and pizza. Only in “exceptional circumstances,” DuPont’s lawyer assured FDA, would the substance rub off packaging and make it into people’s food. So the company cut the amount of the coating it planned to apply to food packaging in half. With billions of dollars in future sales in the balance, questions about Zonyl’s safety were trouble for DuPont. Fast-food restaurants wrapped burgers and fries for working families. At supermarkets, paper and plastic containers were delivering more food options to millions of people. Americans wanted eating to be fast, easy and cheap. The duo initially promoted the test to close friends on social media. In late December, the BuzzFeed quiz was uploaded onto the site. After a brainstorming session that lasted multiple days, they created 170 statements, then narrowed it down to 100. Realizing this tradition could become something more, the duo turned to the holy grail of all online quizzes: BuzzFeed. “We originally made the Innocence Test to be a point of comparison between our lives - not like we’re comparing us to each other, but more like, ‘Here’s what I’ve done, and let’s talk about it,’” Menashe said. In the beginning, the best friends used the test as a way to stay in contact while attending colleges across the country, measuring their college antics. Ranging from “been on a date” to “had the police called on you,” the statements capture the breadth of scandalous behavior, according to Menashe and Wetsel.
